Everything you need to know about life in Year 3

Welcome to Year 3
Year 3 marks the transition from Key Stage 1 into Key Stage 2, with children building on their Year 2 learning and becoming increasingly independent. Across the year, children develop their English and Mathematical skills in line with the National Curriculum, including writing paragraphs, developing grammar and vocabulary, and working with place value, addition and subtraction to 1,000. In Science, children study rocks and soils, magnets, light, and animals including humans. Our wider curriculum includes Ancient Egypt, the Stone Age to Iron Age, Southport in the past and rainforests. In Art, children explore the work of Henri Rousseau and Antony Gormley, developing their own ideas and artistic skills. Children also enjoy Spanish and Djembe drumming, developing their language, musical and performance skills. Learning is supported by visits to The Atkinson Museum, Chester Zoo and Crosby Beach, as well as a Stone Age Day in school, giving children opportunities to bring their learning to life.

Strong Foundations: Reading at Home

Little and often makes a big difference!

Reading regularly at home is a really important part of your child’s learning in Year 3. We ask that children read at least three times each week with an adult. 

Every Wednesday, your child will bring home in their reading folder:

• a new reading book matched to their reading level.
• a library book to enjoy and share with an adult at home.
• their reading record

Each time your child reads, please tick their reading record and sign it before returning it to school the following Wednesday.

The library book is there to encourage a love of reading and sharing stories together. It can be read by an adult, shared together or enjoyed independently by your child.

Three most helpful ways to support learning at home

1. Learn the 2, 5, 10, 3, 4 and 8 times tables
2. Read a minimum of 3 times a week. We encourage pupils to read a mixture of fiction, non-fiction and poetry to develop a broad range of skills and interests.
3. Practise Y3 National Curriculum spellings and rules

Homework

• Reading at least 3 times a week
• Activity set on Spelling Frame  https://spellingframe.co.uk/  
• Times Table Rock Stars (TTRS) at least 3 times a week for 10 minutes.  https://ttrockstars.com/  We encourage children to play ‘Soundcheck’ games as these mirror the end of Year 4 Multiplication Check.  

Please contact your child’s class teacher if they need a new password for either of these online resources.

Optional:

If your child would like to complete this term’s optional homework, please choose from the activities below and bring it into school to share with the class. If you also like to practise handwriting with your child at home, please ask the class teacher for a password to Letter-join or use the attached resource.
