Welcome to Year 4

Within Year 4, children will continue to build on their learning, developing greater confidence, independence and resilience as they progress throughout the year. Across the curriculum, children will deepen their knowledge and understanding while continuing to develop the skills they need to become successful, independent learners.

In English, children will develop their writing in line with the National Curriculum. They will learn to link ideas and paragraphs using a range of cohesive devices and will develop and apply a wider variety of sentence structures, including expanded noun phrases. Children will also develop their use of dialogue, learning how to use speech effectively to bring their writing and characters to life.

In Mathematics, children will develop a deeper understanding of key concepts including fractions, decimals, angles and multiplication and division. A strong focus will continue to be placed on developing fluency with times tables. During Year 4, children will undertake the Multiplication Tables Check (MTC), a government assessment designed to assess children’s recall of their times tables. Further information about this will be shared during Parents’ Evenings. Children are well supported in school throughout the year, with regular opportunities to practise and develop their fluency and confidence.

In Science, children will explore a range of exciting topics, including Animals Including Humans, Electricity, Sound, Living Things and Their Habitats, and States of Matter. Our wider curriculum also includes studying The Romans, The Anglo-Saxons and further developing children’s understanding of our local history of Southport.

In Art, children will explore the work of artists including Paul Cézanne and Rob Miller, using their work as inspiration to develop their own ideas, techniques and artistic skills. Art will also link with our Geography learning, particularly through fieldwork activities. Children will continue to enjoy Spanish, developing both their spoken and written language skills.

Our learning is enriched through a number of exciting experiences throughout the year. During our fieldwork visit to Ambleside, children will develop their understanding of how humans impact on the environment, considering both positive and negative effects. Children will also have the opportunity to take part in a Roman Day in school, bringing their historical learning to life through a range of immersive activities.

And, of course, we cannot forget one of the most exciting parts of Year 4 – our residential trip to Robinwood! This will take place from Wednesday 12th May to Friday 14th May 2027. A parent meeting will be held on Thursday 8th October 2026, where further information about the residential will be shared with you all. We know that a residential trip is not something every child will wish to take part in and children who do not attend Robinwood will still have the opportunity to enjoy a range of exciting and enriching activities in school during these dates.

Strong Foundations: Reading at Home

Little and often makes a big difference!

Reading regularly at home is a really important part of your child’s learning in Year 4. We ask that children read at least three times each week with an adult. Please tick the reading records to show that the children have read. This is checked on a Friday.

Every Friday, your child will bring home in their reading folder:

• a new reading book matched to their reading level.
• their reading record

Each time your child reads, please tick their reading record and sign it before returning it to school the following Friday.

Three most helpful ways to support learning at home

1. Encourage children to play on Times Table Rock Stars. Just 5-10 minutes daily could make a huge impact! We would especially love the children to play ‘Soundcheck’ games as these mirror the end of Year 4 Multiplication Check.
2. Read a minimum of 3 times a week.  We encourage pupils to read a mixture of fiction, non-fiction and poetry to develop a broad range of reading skills and interests.
3. Practise Year 3 / 4 spellings and spelling rules

If your child would like to complete this term’s optional homework, please choose from the activities below and bring it into school to share with the class. If you also like to practise handwriting with your child at home, please ask the class teacher for a password to Letter-join or use the attached resource.
